Gordo, Pitts’ article (which I read the day before in the Startlegram), would contain a valid point if not for one glaring problem: he only accepts “facts” that support his presuppositions and personal and political views. He makes up his own “facts” when he can in order to put people who disagree with him in their place.

Your reply proves Pitts’ point. You don’t like his point of view so you don’t even address the issue of whether his assertions are actual facts. Debunk his specific points and I, or any rational thinker, will give weight to your opinion. I have no idea who you’re talking to. I never mentioned liberal vs. conservative. I have read his stuff; probably 95% of his articles since his post-911 “unspeakable bastards” classic. In those 8+ years, Pitts has consistently in slammed those with whom he disagrees as uninformed.
And he’s entitled to, of course. His column is an opinion piece. But to follow this pattern, then write about the need to make sure one has his/her facts straight is at odds with much of what he has said since I started reading him.
BTW, the gimmick of taking an email from the most uniformed, illiterate, drunk hillbilly he could find, and then presenting it as an example of all his detractors is pretty childish. In my mind, it reduces Pitts’ credibility even more.

Michael Mann one of the leaders of the AGW Hysteria spent years building his case based on “facts” that we have now learned were invented bs based on politics and not science. Here is another fact. Michael Mann, after getting discovered as a fraud and a liar, says that there has been no noteable warming since 1995. So, we had “facts” that were actually lies and then “facts” after the lies were discovered. How do we know what other facts are, in fact, lies?

I would say you are doing fine by questioning things. it’s the people with closed-minds that refuse to believe things when there are facts being shown. And no matter what you believe, that’s not the point Gordon was making. I don’t agree with my boss on everything, but he is still an educated man and at least deserves to be listened to before I toss out everything he says because we disagree on abortion rights or socialized medicine.

Leonard Pitts Jr.’s article should remind all of us to investigate issues in more detail. Unfortunately where do we go for those facts? The news media tells us the facts but doesn’t show us. Manmade global warming can’t be considered a fact but the data is worth considering. Then we must investigate the data and the process and the funding and the motive of the agencies gathering data snd the procedural bias and the economic, corporate, political, international impact and on and on. All to make sure we are doing the right thing – making the right decisions. It’s a tough chore to be informed.
This recent access to every bit of information imagineable is a curse. With no collective consciousness we’re all left finding out the facts individually as we try to educate ourselves, maintain marriages, raise children, help care for our parents, push our careers, fight through a recession and ongoing wars, participate in our communities, and try share in a common goal of Life, Liberty and Property.
I try to listen, learn, think and put in the research. My goal is to increase my understanding and ignore the stubbornly ignorant. We can always improve in that regard.

In truth, what I wrote was rather opaque and obvious, and yet you woefully seem to have misunderstood it. If you did (on both accounts) you would have readily discerned that I agree with the writer in principle; however I find that he undermines his argument by means of genetic fallacy and ad hominem attack. I guess I don’t understand the point of the Pitt’s article. Anyone uneducated enough to think Nazis were a part of World War I doesn’t have the capacity to make informed political opinions. Picking this particular individual to be his example is questionable. While birthers can be lumped into the conspiracy realm, its ridiculous to put global warming skepticism in the same boat. There are many scientist presenting facts refuting man made globally warming. By calling global warming an objective truth, the author is proving his own point, with his own partisan opinion.
Your first mistake = “many scientist”… but I’ll allow that as a typo. Your second mistake is equating the less than 1% politically quacks claiming scientific legitimacy as being an equal partner in the discussion.

Global warming is a fact? Like a wall is a wall type fact? Man-made global warming is a scam. To grow government. 20 years ago we were warned we would never live this long because of global warming. Now what’s happening on Earth? A cooling trend. FACT. It’s in direct correlation with solar flare ups. It’s been one of the least active solar activity times in years.
What is a FACT: Climate Change. My grandma lives in Fort Worth and has a back yard full of fossilized sea life. Every time it rains more and more is exposed. Her back yard used to be underwater. Under oceanic water. In North Texas. Did suburbans and SUV’s and sports cars cause the oceans to rise thousands of years ago to flood my grandma’s back yard?
What do cars expel that’s supposedly so harmful? CO2. What do humans expel when we breathe out? CO2. What do trees consume and transfer into clean, fresh oxygen? CO2. CO2 is a natural substance. And the cover has been blown off of the global warming hoax.
Did the liberal scientists that were studying global temperature trends have an open mind when the facts of their research didn’t give them the results they wanted? No. They fudged the numbers. For years and years and years. We all got lucky they were exposed. It may still be too late. Governments are itching to tax their citizens for the increase in regulations, etc.
