SMU Newspaper hates the Ticket

Ok. I don’t know if any of our other shows got around to talking about this today, but I know the morning show really and truly meant to discuss it but played Chimpanzee riding on a Segway instead.

Meet Nicole Jacobsen. She is the Editor in Chief of SMU’s newspaper, Daily Campus. Well, Nicole went to the Ticket basketball game, and hated it. She wrote and opinion piece taking shots at the Ticket broadcasters and seems to have missed the point of the game entirely, which was FUN.

I sent Nicole the following email:

Nicole,
I appreciate you writing about the game, but I think you have the wrong idea. The whole event was a tongue-in-cheek goof intended to entertain our listeners and raise money for the girls’ basketball trip to Florida. We are not out to harm anyone nor did we do it because we are “thinking [we] are just so amazing.” It was a fun night for our broadcasters, a fun night for our listeners, and a fun night for the girls. Just ask them. They are probably still smiling.

She wrote back:

Hi Gordon -
I’m sure the game was in good fun, and the article was simply my opinion. Also, it said on the Ticket’s Website, admission was free so we were unaware the game was raising money for the team. I’m sorry if I offended you guys in my article, and maybe I did come across a little harsh, but it was after all, an opinion article.
Nicole Jacobsen, Editor in Chief, SMU Daily Campus

We did raise money for the girls through donations at the free event and on our website. Now here is the unpopular part. I feel bad for this girl. She is a college student testing the waters of opinion writing and probably doesn’t deserve the coal-raking she is getting. Hell, I used to write stuff for the Daily Campus. I know it wouldn’t survive much scrutiny. Maybe we should lay off of her and let her mull it over without getting bludgeoned with the same negative review 250 times.

Your call. I just kinda feel bad for her when I read all those comments. Humans were not designed to grow up online and outloud with the whole world able to look over the shoulder and make comments. And yes, I know the counter arguments here. But still, maybe cut her some slack…

it didn’t help that Richie Whitt linked to it, dissing her.

  2. Ron says:

Looks like SMU took down her article

  3. ESPN Greggo says:

To be fair, Gordo, there were only 21 comments as of 5:25 p.m. I agree some of the comments were over the top, but most weren’t. She obviously didn’t get it and didn’t bother to ask anyone who did before firing off an editorial. It was an opinion piece, but with some preliminary research (like checking the Ticket’s web site for instance), she might have gotten her point across a little better.

Opinion articles are published in part to stimulate discussion. Feedback is solicited by the SMU paper and most every other newspaper in this country. If you don’t want a response, don’t write the article.

    Mr Gordon,

I am saddened to see your soft under belly surface, she wrote an opinion piece that the dirty P1′s did not like. So not she will learn the lesson you have learned many times, once you become “public” in your work, then you are out there for public attack. Like it or not that is just the way it is. But we ( me and you) have been down this road many times over the last 10 years, so really nothing new here.

I bet if she took her top off and posed in front of a refrigerator then maybe the filthy P1′s would chill. Just thought.

  5. “It’s only my opinion” is usually the last resort of failed logic. It’s not a free pass to be wrong. For instance, some people will say “No offense, but….”, then proceed to say something offensive. If she’s writing an opinion piece, I hope she’s learned to completely understand the subject before forming opinions. Published opinions should be informed; if the writer is wrong, an apology or any sort of equivocating is just trying to put toothpaste back in the tube. I know that P1′s are being tough on her, but if I were in her place, I would have expected it in advance. Writers should write to have a desired effect on the reader. However, the least desired effect is anger over a lack of knowledge.

I have to disagree a bit, Gordon. She is the EIC of a major university paper. If she wants to put her name on uninformed, poorly written, “opinion” pieces, she is going to have to fade the heat when she gets called out for it.

  7. matma says:

I will not send her an angry email because she is kinda hot and you asked me not too.

  8. KY says:

    She’s a bitch, OK?

I’d also bet she supports terrorists.

  9. Patrick Keefe says:

    Gordon,
I have 2 major problems with her article. First, it’s ok to write an opinion piece. I sometimes even enjoy the opinions of others. However, my response to this piece (or POS) would be something along the lines of, “I would agree with you except for the fact that you’re completely wrong.” I also noted in her reply to you that she used “you guys” instead of “y’all”. Whether she is one or not, she’s made herself appear to be a yankee carpetbagger and needs to be banned from Texas…permanently.

It’s a cruel, cruel world. The sooner she learns this, the better off she’ll be. Just my opinion.

Appreciate your class gordo, I haven’t read her article, don’t suppose I need to, doesn’t matter anyway, like you mentioned, it’s just an opinion.

I’ll be a little more entertained by you in the future because of the class you’ve shown today.

    Thanks,
    P1-Blake

In order to rise to the position of Editor in Chief of a major university, it would seem that the ability to write well would be a requirement. Putting aside her ill-informed opinion, she’s a very amatuerish writer.

  13. Sphincteriphic says:

With nothing more than a head shot, I cannot comment intelligently. Game was awesome. Last time I was in Moody was chatting with Mark West after a Mavericks practice. We finally had our big man… and now you know… the rest… of…. the story…

  14. Robot Chicken says:

I think Nicole showed great courage in exposing the big, dirty Ticket. In fact, I think she missed discussing how this was a ploy for staff to rub up against underage, innocent, sweet, young girls without legal complications. Go all the way Nicole!!! All the way! Oh yeah. That’s it…

  15. RMJ says:

“I’m entitled to an opinion” is often used in debates as a defence of a belief or stance on a subject. Whether it’s used to end a debate (1) or to add weight to a person’s position (2) it is equally useless as a debating tactic. Debates can only be resolved by presenting sound arguments with supporting evidence. Stating one’s rights and entitlements adds nothing to the debating process. Having a right to an opinion does not make that opinion right.

The young lady needs to work a little harder before she “speaks her mind”.

  16. Brad says:

When someone puts together an event that raises money for a good cause, you probably don’t want to write an “opinion piece” about it.

  17. P1 Brandon says:

I agree folks could have used a little more tact and at least considered that this was written by a student, not a professional.

It is troubling to me that the author and the Daily Campus will tuck tail and run quite so easily though. If you do put something out there, even if you do get dogpiled, the respectable way to handle it is to pick your chin up and move on, IMHO.

  18. P1 Brandon says:

Nevermind…the article wasn’t appearing in her listing so I thought they took it down.

The quality of the writing is quite poor and I found a few silly typos/missing words.

I went to SMU for a year and a half and then finished up at UTD…in my experience, SMU is a play ground for the well-healed and not much else. Far better academia at UTD and very comparable job prospects comparing undergrad to undergrad degree.

Eh…I also could give a fuller, more well-formed, engorged opinion with more than a headshot of Nicole.

P1′s and alike will be posting on a website that they are pissed because there isn’t a good candidate to save Rhyner’s liver and Corby is ruining the afternoon drive time.

  23. lyndse says:

There are hundreds of “free” car washes where donations are accepted to help kids get to camp or state tourneys or whatever…The Ticket event was fun for everyone, I thought…

  24. Jake says:

what’s really funny is that every article on SMU’s page has 0 comments, but her piece has over 20 now…

  25. Spiny Norman says:

How come nobody noticed Tonya Harding had enrolled at SMU?

  26. Heywood Jablomee says:

    Nice piece.I mean post.Nevermind.

    What?

  27. Spank Miller says:

Isn’t the bigger story here, completely aside from how mangled her facts were, that she is Editor-in-Chief of the campus newspaper at a seemingly top-flight school, and she can’t write at all?

  28. P1 Paco says:

As an SMU student, I knew this would rile up the dirty P1. P1 Brandon is dumb. SMU is a great place to get an education.

  29. P1 Taco says:

P1 Paco- SMU is a great place to get a diploma- that is it. Yes- technically they do have good professors, etc however, the moral character of the VAST majority of the SMU student is sub par. Take away all the “daddy’s money” from the school and you have nothing. God forbid you have a school where the students know the value of an education, not just the value of getting the diploma so their parents will buy them a house, car, and job at dad’s company when they graduate.

And before you spout off about not knowing anything about SMU- YES I know all about SMU first hand.

    Stay hard black leg..errr….P1 Brandon.

  30. P1 Brandon says:

That’s how you highlight the greatness of SMU…by calling me dumb? Did anything I write actually give you a basis to determine where my IQ is on a scale or what my GPA might have been? (>3.8, thank you)

Wonderful example of how SMU has enriched your ability to express your thoughts and feelings.

Upon the public revealing of Nicole’s piece…of writing….I formulated my own, quick opinion of her based solely on her words: A snobby, my poop doesn’t stink blonde who criticizes everything in life because it doesn’t quite match up to what she sees in the mirror every day…who probably talks like the triple fake Jordan Rhyner.

Upon seeing her picture and reading her all-to-quick, ‘oh-well’ apology, I feel my opinions are justified. Such negativity she writes…so condescending…so ignorant on her part to be so swift to complain and criticize, for that’s what she has probably done all her life. Except now she finds a cloak called Editor in Chief to hide behind while she vomits her ‘opinion’ all over the place.

In my opinion, her exterior OK looks, which are now tainted by the interior ugliness she exudes through her writing, does not warrant an acceptance of her apology. I think she may have cried a little when she got a public spanking for what she said, so as “public parents” we need to say “Oh, I’m sorry sweety for criticizing your writing and making you cry and feel bad and all…but…I think it’s time you learned what happens in the real world when your eagle mouth overloads your hummingbird arse.”

I realize this is a county where people are free to say and write really just about anything they want…but shouldn’t we try harder to become the responsible, caring, loving, sexually active non-gay homo sapiens that life intended us to be?

I know Nicole. She was not even at the game. It must be tough to write an article when you don’t go to the game.

  34. generic P1 dude says:

Good. Glad the SMU chick had nothing good to say about The Ticket. Perhaps now the powers that be at KTCK 1310 will take this under advisement and stop broadcasting all of those useless SMU football games. I would rather listen to a broadcast of a six man high school game in a town that I have never heard of than a broadcast of SMU’s sorry team. The only folks who care about SMU athletics are those who go to or went to SMU.
