  1. About your discussion this morning on ScatterShooting — Past, Present, Future –

(From “Four Quartets” by T.S. Eliot)

    Time present and time past
Are both perhaps present in time future,
And time future contained in time past.
If all time is eternally present
    All time is unredeemable.
What might have been is an abstraction
    Remaining a perpetual possibility
Only in a world of speculation.
What might have been and what has been
Point on one end, which is always present.
    Footfalls echo in the memory
Down the passage which we did not take
Towards the door we never opened
Into the rose-garden. My words echo
    Thus, in your mind.
    But to what purpose
Disturbing the dust on a bowl of rose-leaves
    I do not know.
    Other echoes
    Inhabit the garden.
    Shall we follow?
    …..
And the conversation rises and slowly fades into silence
And you see behind each face the mental emptiness deepen
    Leaving only the growing terror of nothing to think about;
Or when, under ether, the mind is conscious but conscious of nothing -
I said to my soul, be still, and wait without hope
For hope would be hope for the wrong thing; wait without love
For love would be love of the wrong thing; there is yet faith
But the faith and love and hope are all in the waiting.
